Another busy day here at the farm. The Kidling failed to remind anyone that he had to be at work at 11am, so there was a bit of a scramble at 10:30 to get him there on time. While I was in town I stopped at the shop to pick up a couple cans of carburetor cleaner for the machines here at the farm. I didn't get any carburetors cleaned today though, as I was too busy cutting grass and trimming hooves.
I could have sworn that I had just done PoohBear's hooves a short time ago, but they were already horrendously overgrown and starting to turn up; I couldn't put the job off any longer. Some horses' hooves (like Dirk's) grow very slowly, but PoohBear's grow at a phenomenal rate! I think it might be because his misshapen legs make his muscles work harder, causing increased blood-flow, which in turn promotes the faster hoof growth. At least, that's my theory until someone comes up with a better one. I had originally hoped to take advantage of the decent weather and trim his hooves outdoors; That idea didn't go over so well. He fussed as struggled and wanted to go back into his paddock, and the blasted flies were thick, including horse-flies. I took him back inside the barn and he relaxed considerably. I really wish that I could find (and afford) a proper farrier out here; I got his hooves looking at lot better than they were, but it's a far cry from a professional job.
Once PoohBear's hooves were taken care of, I trimmed as much grass as I could before it started to rain again. We're under yet another Severe Thunderstorm Watch, though so far everything is quiet. I picked up The Kidling after his shift ended at 7pm, and when we got home I fired up the grill to preheat it while we fed the animals. Supper tonight was (once again) BBQ'd burgers, with a nice green salad on the side, and cold baked beans - A nice meal after a hot day's work.
This next week is going to be short, and busy. I've just about caught up on all the lawn-mowers at the shop; There are just three left. Lots of other machines mind you, but just the three lawn mowers. I'll be heading to Calgary on Thursday afternoon, and I'm taking a U-Haul trailer along to clear more stuff out of Mom's house. On our last trip she sent us back with box-loads of books and records (actual vinyl LPs) that I had forgotten about. Unfortunately, this is going to be another of those quick in-and-out trips as I have to head back to Shaunavon again on Monday. The main purpose of this trip is to see my cousins at their huge annual family BBQ, which I had to miss last year because I was too busy. This year I'm forcing myself to make a little more time for myself and family, and thus hopefully avoid burning myself out at work.
Trixstir also works at the hospital this week, which pretty much means I have to run the bowling alley at night. At least The Kidling is out of school now, so he has no excuse to not help with the chores around the farm.
