Food for thought

The continental breakfast offered here at the Super-8 motel isn't going to win any awards, but it is good, and probably one of the healthiest I've had in a long time.   They have a Belgian-waffle station, orand and apple juices, teas, coffee, assorted pasties and muffins, cereals, yogurts, bread for toasting, and fresh fruit.  I had a waffle, lemon-danish, blue-berry muffin, strawberry yogurt, banana, and OJ.  I'll skip the muffin tomorrow though, as it didn't taste as good as it looked.  Might go for some toast instead.  Lunch at the Kohler cafeteria was taco-salad; not bad, but not as filling as I'd like.  Probably just as well, it was hard enough staying awake through the power-point part of the class as it was.  The instructors know that part's boring, and did their best to break it up a bit and assure us that it would get better tomorrow.  Tomorrow we actually start doing hands-on work with the engines, tearing them down and putting them back together to see how all the little bits and pieces fit into each other.  Should be fun!

After the classes I headed north a couple of miles to a Wal*Mart super-centre where I picked up some Coke-Zero, some bottled water, some microwave popcorn, and some SPAM.  Why SPAM?  Because back home the only kind they have is the regular, and the low-salt; When trixstir and I honeymooned in Hawaii, we discovered that there are several differnet varieties of SPAM, and this was the first time I've been stateside again to get some more.  The only problem is, I can't remember exactly which ones we liked the best, but I made an educated guess and went with the Bacon, Hickory, and Black-Pepper versions.  I also picked up a couple cans of "Oven Roasted Turkey SPAM" which should either be delicious, or a complete bomb.  We shall see...

For supper, I found a Hardy's restaurant near the Wal*Mart; We don't have this chain in Canada, and it was a nice change from McDonald's.  I want to try different brands while I'm here, while still basically staying withing my comfort zone, and budget.  I had the "Frisco" burger, which is basically their take on Jack-In-The-Box's Sourdough Melt: Grilled sourdough, processed swiss cheese, bacon, tomatoes, mayo, and a big thick beef patty.  Delicious!  :9   Tomorrow after classes a group of us are going to the Kohler Club, which is supposed to be a very good "pub type" restaurant.  On Thursday night, we'll be going to Schwarz's Supper Club in St. Anna, which comes highly recommended.

Would be nice if I had some friends to share these restaurant explorations with, such as palabrajot, who turns 43 today!  Here's hoping you had a great birthday, Mr. Qat, and may there be many more!  :)

friends, kohler, birthday, food
