Wind chill warning for
Shaunavon - Maple Creek - Val Marie - Cypress Hills continued
Wind chills of minus 40 to minus 45 this morning.
This is a warning that extreme wind chill conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.
Cold northerly winds have ushered in cold Arctic air over the province. Temperatures near minus 30 along with wind speeds of 15 to 20 km/h are producing wind chill values near or below minus 40 across Western Saskatchewan this morning. These will moderate above warning criteria this morning as temperatures rise and winds diminish.
At these wind chill values frostbite on exposed skin is possible within 10 minutes.
Yesterday afternoon wasn't too bad, actually - I was moving some stuff from the farm shop to the town shop, and the weather seemed fine. Once the sun went down though, it got bitterly cold! The drive home wasn't at all pleasant - there was blowing snow drifting across the highway, and a light fog that made it very difficult to see where the road was! Things got even worse an hour later as Trixstir started heading home, and she said that there were parts with a total white-out condition! I watched as she arrived at the farm, and a semi coming the other direction was just crawling along the highway! I've never seen a semi move that slowly unless they were stopping or making a turn. :/ Thankfully the winds last night were mostly from the North, so the house was mostly sheltered from the worst of it and managed to stay reasonably warm.
Here's hoping that the old adage stays true, and we're into much nicer weather by month's-end!
