Apparently, I missed the excitement this afternoon, as I was in town trying to help Trixstir with some stuff at the bowling alley. Today was our first day of business in the new year, and we needed to reset a few things. Found out that the recent high winds and snow had buried our emergency-exit doors in the back, so I spent some time digging those out. I also made an appointment for my first customer of 2010 for Iron Pony; One of the Senior-League ladies wants me to come fix her snow-blower tomorrow afternoon. Sounds like it's just in dire need of a tune-up, with seems to be about 90% of the problems with small engines. The mail today included a hand-made Christmas card from Donna Barr, which was a most welcome delight, and my eagerly-awaited package from Amazon. I used my Christmas Ca$h to order the complete series of FarScape, as well as the first two seasons of The Collector, and season 2 of Pushing Daisies. **Happy Sigh** :)
Anyway, the excitement...
Apparently, shortly after I left for town, a semi arrived at the farm. This isn't uncommon; The next farm down the road is the neighbour's feed-lot, and we often get truckers stopping at our farm when they're looking for the feed-lot. Up until now though, they've always pulled their trucks over onto the shoulder of the highway, and walked up the driveway to ask us about the feed-lot. This guy however, drove his semi right into the yard! What the heck was he thinking?! It's pretty obvious that our place is not a feed-lot, and there's no room to turn a semi around in the yard. A normal semi would have trouble, but this one was a two-trailer unit! Not only is there no room to turn a vehicle that big around, but with the deep snow drifts, there's even less room to manuevre! The Kidling says he was here for more than two hours before he finally called the feed-lot for help, and then it took another hour or so (and a large tractor) to get him unstuck and out of our yard. On his way out, he ran over one of my driveway markers; The LED head didn't get broken, but he bent the steel rod to the ground. Rather than straightening it up again, he stuck the LED marker in the snow a few feet over, and left the rod bent against the ground.
That's how I found things when I came home; I wondered what the heck this black thing in the driveway was, and I was less than impressed when I recognized it. Had I come home in the dark, there would have been several (all bad) possibilities: I may have not noticed the steel rod, and wound up with it puncturing a tire. The guy had stuck the marker in the snow a few feet over, and if anyone turned there (expecting the marker to be marking the safe area) they would have wound up in the ditch! Amazingly, even though it was only a few inches in the ground, the rod stayed in place! It would seem that the metal is soft enough that I was able to bend it back upright with one hand, and the rod still stayed stuck firmly in the ground! In the end, everything is fine since I was able to straighten the rod and place the marker back over it, but why the heck didn't the twit do this himself? The Kidling says that the guy didn't seem to be playing with a full deck, and from what I could observe, I'd have to agree.
The kidling goes back to school tomorrow. His Christmas vacation is over, so now I can relax again! ;)
