Had tea with
willqaf on Thursday evening at the NTUC Centre off Shenton Way at the Cheers Cafe in the Basement. At that time (5pm), there was hardly anything available (both the in-house Delifrance and the Dim Sum offerings were almost nil). Purchased one of the 2 remaining fried poh piah and asked for a Milo - was told they don't do Milo (I mean, duh?) but hot chocolate (ho-kay, how come suddenly so posh one - next time will ask for chocolat chaud then). Plonked for that due to lack of viable alternatives.
willqaf ordered some microwaveable chee cheong fun (char siew or small shrimp flavour), and since the poh piah wasn't exactly filling and it was cold outside, I decided to order one too, as the thought of having some steaming CCF on a wet day sounded appealing. The CCF had to be microwaved, and the server brought them to us after he had done so. The CCF was in a plastic container, and there were 3 small compartments on the side containing the sweet sauce, oil and chilli sauce.
I knew something was not quite right when I noticed that the oil in the compartment was still rock solid in one big white goop. No matter, I dug it out and smeared it on the CCF, which melted it. Then I cut into the CCF and took a bite and it was the most disgusting CCF I had ever tasted. The flour was powdery and chewy and it felt as if I was eating raw pasta. The so-called "char siew" was also completely tasteless and unrecognisable apart from the orangery colouring, and if it was actually real meat (which I highly doubt), it must have been proccessed to death. After a few attempts at trying to swallow the CCF, both of us gave up and couldn't eat further. Just remember - The microwavable CCF at Cheers - don't touch it with a 10-foot pole. And it costs $1.40 also - for 10c more I can get the famous Arcade CCF which is oh so delectable .......

Last night I had the opportunity to hear the newest CD offering from violinist Joshua Bell (and he still looks cute after all these years) playing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. It was to die for. Joshie's playing and interpretation of the concerto really blew me away. After not heard the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto for a long time, it was a great re-acquaintance to one of my old favourites. Will buy the CD, and add it to my collection of his playing Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, all very good .....
Also heard Angela Gheorghiu's rendition of 2 favourite Puccini arias: Il Mio Babbino Caro from Gianni Schichhi, and Il Questa Reggia from Turandot, nice nice ......
