Sometimes, we are struck by images that just seem surreal or ironic. Today, I was biking to class and was stopped at a light. As I waited in traffic for my chance to cross, a young man came whizzing by on his mountain bike to make a right turn. This doesn't get to me much in and of itself. What struck me was the unlit cigarette hanging loosely from his flaccid lips. I was also struck by his inability to look anyone around him in the eye or acknowledge another presence. It would only have been worse had his cigarette been lit. I just don't get it.
