Leaving the horse behind

Currently, I'm looking into finishing my undergrad/pursuing my masters but because of my interested field I'll most likely be going away. This can range from a few hours from my home in Ohio to either coast, but I'm really shooting for a few schools of Massachusetts.

My problem? Leaving my horse. Depending on where I go depends on how long it will be before I take her. Or, honestly, if I move to either coast or Massachusetts could be "long time - never" due to costs and if it's practical/safe to move a 20-something mare. I know people do it all the time for college or working or whatever but I'm having trouble leaving her behind. Where I currently have her boarded, I'd feel comfortable in the care and attention they give her that she'd be well taken care of. My vet and farrier are probably the best I've ever found so there's no worry there. I'm worried about my heart breaking a bit knowing I won't see her for a few months. I'm worried if something happens and I need to be there - and I'll potentially be a few hours drive or flight away. I'm worried if she does unfortunately pass away that I won't be there.

It's ridiculous but Cracker's my heart horse. October will be 12 years we've been together. She's mostly retired now; we just poke around, do trail rides, and she gets used for various ground activities for day camps. She's 25 right now.

How have you all managed to leave your horses behind?

I challenged them to do the American flag after I read the article about the horse painted with the Union Jack.

miss my horse, love my horse!
