So I just kind of accidentally bought a 6-yr-old TB. My bad.
Anyway, he hits himself like CRAZY, which is something none of my QHs ever did. I've only had him for 2 weeks so we're working on getting him outfitted now that I'm a bit more convinced that he's not going to randomly go all Psychopants on me. He has been going in bell boots up front (overreaches like WHOA) and polo wraps front and back.
I don't want any fleece-lined boots because we go out in trails a LOT and I don't want gnarly muddy things strapped onto him for hours at a time.
1) He clips his hind pasterns on the inside. That awesome area that's too low for the ankle boots or sport boots. I was thinking of getting the Acavallo No-Turn Bell Boots (
http://www.doversaddlery.com/a-cavallo-no-turn-bell-boot/p/X1-04196/) for his hinds to see if they protect that area. Has anyone ever used these? Or have any better suggestions?
2) Today I replaced his front polos with some wannabe Eskadron open-front boots and (because I could hear the plastic smacking) found out that he brushes terribly up front. Do you think that keeping this type of boot on may, over time, kind of teach him to gait more correctly? I'm going to have my blacksmith work on his angles to try to get a less klutzy movement, but that'll take time. Should I stick with the hard-sided ones or could that be damaging in some way? (He doesn't mind the polos, or damage himself with them, I'm just wondering if the weight/sound of these other boots might cause him to hit less; IDK IS THAT STUPID OF ME??)
Also, sorry mods, but iPad won't allow me to add tags :(
