I am going through something similar to this. My gelding had proud flesh removed from a wound on his fetlock. The vet took a scalpel to it and then we put him on strict stall rest for 2 weeks. I had to alternate treatements day a: cleanse wound with saline, antibiotic ointment, gauze, rolled gauze, standing bandage, standing wrap ( ... )

Did you find it a better alternative to get it cut off? I may have to do that with my mare, it was down but now it's back ....

I did find it to be the better treatment. His wound was a few weeks old and had not been taken care of prior to me purchasing him. I attempted to heal it on my own for a couple of weeks but there was already quite a bit of proud flesh and it was a sizable wound. Maybe it would have been different if the wound was cared for properly when from when it first happened.

not a vet here. but i can't see how the exercise could be bad for her -- increased blood flow, decreased crazy-horse. as long as she's not further adding to the injury, i'd say protect the damage and treat the proud flesh aggressively, but let her move if she wants to.

That's what my vet said, she just said as long as she's not doing any tight turns and to keep it bandaged there's no reason why she can't be out.

I am hoseing down the leg every day as well, I may try burn it down again with the baking powder but I want to confer with my vet first

I wouldn't be riding her, I'd be hand walking her, particularly while you have the proud flesh. I'd be buying a copper sulphate based solution (proudaide) and treating with that, and perhaps getting your vet to come out and debride the proud flesh, will bleed like a stuck pig but definitely helps.

She hand walked every day or so, whenever I can manage. Today was the first time in 3 weeks.

yea I may try that, I need to contact my vet anyway and let her know, we may have to try another route if it's just going to come back.

I like to do a harsh thing like the copper sulphate product, and then a 'soft' dressing, for example wash out with fresh water, salt water, collodial silver, fresh water and then manuka honey which has really fabulous healing properties, of course it depends on the injury first and foremost, but that works well.

I don't think you did anything wrong by riding her. You obviously sound like you KNOW your horse, and you know what you're doing.

Thats a pain in the butt that it came back...My guy had a leg wound (where a hunk of skin was literally peeled off) and the vet gave me "cothivet" to help prevent/treat for proud flesh.

http://www.medicanimal.com/product/~cothivet-spray-30-ml/~product_id=4486?recommendation=Y

This is the stuff, it sure doesn't say "proud flesh" treatment, but it worked for my guy. And it is also not too pricey.
Might be worth a shot??
