I just went through something like this with our Shetland mare. The day after her spring shots (2/14), she was out in her field and refused to move. We thought at first that she was stuck in the mud (stupid spring, it's deep for a little girl like her), but even after we got her going, it was obvious she was in a lot of pain through her shoulder, back, and hind legs.
We had the vet come out and do 3 days of IV DMSO and stall rest, just on the off chance that she had actually pinched a nerve or cracked a vertebrae playing out in the field. For 2 days she didn't want to move at all, but then she loosened up and she's fine now. She's going back to outside turnout today, and work on Monday.
I had heard about muscle reactions to shots but had never seen anything like it. Definitely scary stuff. I wonder if having all those shots in 3-ways and 4-ways increase the risk of a reaction? We already have one who likes to spike a fever and get impacted after vaccines, so we make sure to space them out over a few days and keep him lubricated with bran and oil.
I hope your boy feels better soon, and please share your vet's findings with us! :)
