Alright guys,
Sorry to bother you with pretty much the opposite question about another horse, but you all were so helpful with the first one…..
I wrote about him a little bit in the comments of my previous post.
This particular 7yo OTTB is a runner. He will not rock back at all, and even when I try to let him stretch out and slow my post he will just trot faster and faster until he breaks into a canter. My word for him is ‘stressed out’.
His owner started him in a snaffle, then slowly went up to harsher and harsher bits because of his running, and now he is in a big, big port. She ‘slows’ him down by almost rollkuring him. He can basically canter in a circle in place with his head cranked, but he can not trot slowly and relaxed around the ring to save his life, even when I give him his head.
I think he needs a different bit, and needs to learn to move into the bit, because right now he goes behind the bit and I feel like I lose all control. He won’t rock back at all the only way I can get him to stop is to haul on his mouth. I tried a French link happy mouth on him but he ran through it and kept trying to run away with me. I’m a good rider, but I look out of control on this horse.
So I spent some time in a mullen rubber mouth Pelham, which gave me control without causing him to go under the bit so much. I just spent like an hour trotting, and trying to teach him to whoa with voice and seat vs hauling on his mouth. I really have not seen much improvement and I get so frustrated when even after an hour he is still running. I’d rather not run his ass down in a round pen before each ride.
Help!? I’ve never worked with this problem before.
