Strange horse behaviour

George my welsh section D has began to have some behaviour issues when hacking out. (Trail riding for my Friends across the pond!). Due to my work schedule my BO and trainer has taken him out for me and he has behaved very strangely. Jogging, spooking, crabbing and generally behaving in a very erratic manner. I have a different perspecitve for you.

My Foxtrotter always acted up with me, especially out on the trail or exercise track. I never felt intimidated by it and would just ride it out and keep going. A few years ago I was giving some informal lessons to a friend on him who was becoming quite a good rider. One day I offered to let her ride him on the exercise track while I did barn chores and warned her that she would need to be cautious if she asks him to canter because he has a tendency to take off.

When she brought him in I asked how it went and she reported that he was a complete gentleman and gave her a nice steady w/t/c when she asked for it and she never felt as if he even considered taking off.

This has been completely consisten with him. If I put a greenie on him he's solid as a rock. If I or someone more experienced is on him he takes us for a ride. It's almost as if he saying "I know you can handle this so hold on!" He's great for teaching newbies because he'll get more difficult to ride as they improve.

Maybe your pony just is expressing himself with your trainer because he knows she can handle it, and trys extra hard to keep it together with you. Maybe its an attitude difference between you two. I'm a rather mellow rider who never has issues riding my trainer's Rolex horse, when a pefectionist friend of mine takes a lesson on him he spends a majority of the time bucking and making a fuss.
