New Horse! Update on Mason

Jan 23, 2010 01:28

So last Saturday I went to visit the seven year old 16.3hh OTTB gelding named Mason (Beach Motel) with my dad. We both really liked him. We brought along my western saddle to see what he'd do, because he'd never been ridden in one before, and I could tell he was very surprised by the whole ordeal, but he took it like a complete champ. :) He carted around my dad just fine (who probably needs some more work on his riding before I would feel confident about turning him loose on Mason). I rode him in his regular English saddle and tried getting him on the bit, because quite frankly he carries his head around like a llama (or maybe a giraffe) right now, but I could tell it just hadn't "clicked" with him yet. Even though he's very uneducated, he's had plenty of time in the saddle, and I really REALLY like his level mind and his super sweet personality. Even though he was frustrated by all the new things he was expected to do, he only really did a little bit of crow hopping and he thought about bucking. I was very impressed with his willingness to try hard, even for me, a person who had never ridden him before. Once I figure him out a little more and get him working better, I have a feeling he's going to turn out to be a great guy!

My trainer met us there, and although she doesn't like his sloping pasterns, she felt he would be appropriate for me because I will only ever be doing lower level eventing with him. Needless to say, we decided to buy him and he's coming home tomorrow! :) I can't wait to see his reaction when he meets my miniature pony gelding and my Appendix mare. I anticipate lots of prancing and snorting in my future! :)

These were taken when we visited him last Saturday, after he had been ridden by the seller, my dad, and myself.

He has the cutest face. :)

I'm absolutely terrible at posting regularly in my own livejournal/blog, because I just lose interest, but I'm going to try my best to start keeping my LJ updated on his progress. If you're interested in keeping up with me and Mason, feel free to add me. I can't promise I'll maintain the motivation to keep posting after a couple weeks, but we'll see. :)

Also, anyone have any recommendations for good books on thoroughbreds or OTTBs? This quarter at school is completely INSANE for me right now, but I'm hoping to only take 10 credits next quarter, so I'd love to have some horsey reading material once I find the time to read for pleasure again. Mason has really piqued my interest in TBs, and I'd love to learn more about racing too.

I almost forgot... I've been thinking about some show names for him. Beach Motel is pretty boring, and I'd love to have a spectacular name for him in the show ring. I've been thinking about something ocean/sea or bird related... any suggestions? Thanks guys! :)
