Working Students?

So, I've been considering joining a working student program sometime in the near-ish future, but not exactly sure where. I've just started looking into this, so, any suggestions(or warnings, lol) of places(in the US) to check out?
I'd also just like to hear your guys' stories, have you ever been involved in one, where, what was it like, what have ( Read more... )

honestly I'd skip both and go to England to ride with the Bartles at the YRC.

Haha I wish, but England's not really an option at this point in time :\

Are they that awesome? If I ever have enough cash to go on a ~*~dressage vacation~*~ that's where I was going to go, but information on their little visit-and-ride program is kind of ... vague.

definitely click the 'working students' tag on this entry to see other very similar requests and stories! there's been a few good discussions about working students before.

Also check out the chronicle of the horse forums (www.chornofhorse.com) - I know both these places have been discussed at length on the eventing board.

You might want to check them out--the students work very hard, but you learn a lot here. The trainer is awesome. I believe they offer living arrangements.

I was in a working student program VERY briefly (IE. one day). The farm I did it at I was NOT impressed with the state of their schooling horses (for one, they had a pony who kept looking like he wanted to fall over, and the coach kept repremanding him, but I realized he was leaning back like a horse that had foundered. He looked so in pain!!).

The kids/students had to live in a decrepit trailer, and I personally felt the owner took advantage of them, they had to even weed her garden! That is beyond working student.

Needless to say, I didn't come back.

I had a friend who was a working student for Team CEO and seemed to like it - learned a lot and definitely progressed in her learning. I couldn't find her on the working student page, but on the sold horses she's on there with a horse she worked with while there and eventually bought, La Fantaisie (or Gina Beana). I think Julie was a working student through most of college, I'll have to ask.
