Anyone ever had a horse that was perfect for the farrier until he started nailing on the back shoes?
My ponay is great for the fronts but horrible when it comes to the hinds. She lets him pull the hind shoe, trim the foot, but when he starts nailing, she starts yanking her foot away. This is bad because most of the time, the ends of the nails are sticking out creating a dangerous situation for my farrier's hands and the ponays hind legs when she swings that foot back down. First couple of times, the twitch helped things but now she is just as bad with the twitch. Ponay is 8 and had never had shoes on before last March. She has a stifle situation that forces me to put hinds on her; she drags the toe so much that she wears her toe down too much.
She has started kicking at him. She got a ponay spanking but that didnt help too much. I have tried ace (no effect), I had the vet come out and we used a cocktail of dorm and torb to keep her from kicking him.........cant go into details but I will never do that again. It didnt completely work anyways. I dont think its pain related as I always bute her the night before and the morning of just because I wonder about the stifle causing pain (but she is bad for both hinds and only has a stifle problem in one). The vet also said she doesnt not think its pain related. The farrier says he doesnt think she was quicked.
Some have suggested a lip chain but Id rather not even go there. Others have suggested stuffing her face with grain to distract her. I have been picking up her hinds high as possible, stretching them out, and to the side.....she is comfortable with that. I have a hammer and I am practicing with her but I seriously dont want to be kicked at either. I know its my problem and I need to deal with it as it is not the farriers job to make her behave....but i really dont want to be kicked!
Suggestions? She is perfect in all other ways so its not a "sell her" situation here.
