I am not sure if this is an appropriate forum for this discussion, but I feel that equestrians are going to best be able to point me in the right direction and offer commentary.
I have had ongoing issues with endometreosis and while I really don't want to discuss the detail of that *here* I do want to get some facts straight on Premarin. As of yesterday my gynecologist prescribed Premarin for me. Well, rather, we discussed using an estrogen cream and I later discovered that the prescription was for Premarin. Of course, this drug has been the center of a hot debate over PMU horses. If the industry is still run in the vile manner it was as late as 2005, I want nothing to do with supporting it and will discuss with my doctor a change of medication. However, I know the industry was supposed to undergo an overhaul, complete with better standards for the horses.
A brief search on Wikipedia reveals
this article, but in the description of how the horses are handled, no citation is given. Furthermore, it appears to be written by NAERIC, which is the organization that represents PMU ranchers. I would like to believe that this is how the horses are truly cared for, but I am skeptical. How can one organization inspect so many ranches with such meticulous care?
My gut feeling is to reject this form of estrogen treatment in favor of one that is more humane to animals, or one that is synthetic and therefore does not involve animals at all. But then, what if this is the very best treatment available for me at this time? As such, I want to know all the most current information about the PMU industry that I can before making a decision.
