Donating A Horse

Feb 02, 2009 17:32

I have a really super nice Western Pleasure breeding stock Paint mare, who was recently diagnosed with severe arthritis in her front ankles and knees. She's 16.3, Chestnut, and showed western pleasure for a couple of seasons before this all happened. She's in northeast Ohio ( Read more... )

If you're looking to donate her, have you offered Fieldstone Farms Theraputic Riding Center?

i was just going to say that. If nothing else, they will probably let you put her on trial there. They take really, REALLY good care of those guys there

If this horse has 'severe arthritis', I sadly doubt that a therapeutic riding school will accept them.

Mm I don't know. They don't do too too much there. I mean they have horses for kids that aren't horribly physically or mentally disabled, to go over mini crossrails and canter and stuff. But for the most part it's walk and trot and go in circles and stuff.

If you get desperate, you can contact Camp Anne in Copake, NY. They are a state run camp for people with disabilities. Last summer, they began a therapeutic equine program and you probably know how difficult it can be to find a completely trustworthy steed. It is, however, far far away from you, so it might not be an option, but just thought I'd let you know.

Lake Erie College MIGHT take her for a trial. Especially if you said she does fine walk/trot maybe canter on Bute. They just lost 2 of their lower-level schoolmasters over winter break and are looking for more. Contact Cami Harkless at charkless@lec.edu to see if they'd be willing to take her on a 1 month trial.

Good luck!

I'm just concerned that they'll try to jump her, and that wouldn't be a good idea. But it's still worth a try to call them. :)

I used to volunteer for camp cheerful in Strongsville & they had horses there that could not canter. One horse had navicular (sp?) problems I believe and he was managed on bute and just assigned to classes where they stayed at the walk & on good days he could trot. Never canter though. They also have a horse with COPD and he is on daily meds as well. It's worth a try calling them & seeing if they could use another horse they just might take him.
