So i decided that if i end up scoring an internship this summer i am going to treat myself to a nice, new trail saddle for apollo. this way i can also stop using my trainer's, hehe. One of hers that i use that's really comfy is a big horn (i dont have the model number on hand, sorry). I'm going to look into those, but i was wondering if any of you ( Read more... )

I love my barn's Big Horns. We've had them for years - some of them for 10-15 years - and they're still in good shape (After 10-15 years of the abuse they go through at a camp riding barn, with little to no cleaning/oiling? That's pretty damn amazing.). I find them quite comfortable, light, and practical.

We've been trying out some Abetta and Wintec Western trail saddles lately (because they're cheaper than Big Horns here), and I'm not a fan. The Abettas have a very shallow seat and short cantle and something in the tree felt like it was digging into my thighs, and none of the horses liked them, and they have stirrups that are weird and difficult to adjust from the saddle. The Wintecs feel great in the store (the seat is extremely comfy, nice and deep), but with extensive riding the stirrup fenders feel very very stiff - almost like they have thin metal in them. The stitching on the fenders is also coming undone after just a month. The Wintec trees also may be uneven, because they don't hang evenly on posts (they fall off when placed ( ... )

I'm a HUGE fan of my western Wintec for trails. I've got one that fits my Arab colt, so a NSH shouldn't be too far off from him. The best part of the saddle: Get it muddy and just hose the thing off. Mine still looks brand new. I've not had a problem with the fenders feeling too stiff, nor has anything started coming undone.

That said, if you've got the cash to spend, Big Horn, Tucker, Circle Y, Billy Cook are all nice brands. One of the boarders at my barn just got a new Tucker and its GORGEOUS.

A lot depends if your NSH is bilt like an arab or a saddlebred. If a saddlebred, national bridle has what you'll need.

If he's built more like an arab, you're better off looking into the arabian saddle company for a saddle. They dont have many western type saddles but they'll be the best fit. Also, try SStack.com for some saddles that'll fit arabs.
