what's hard is that in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, Big Brown looked phenomenal.

Hard to say what happened after that. Unsound issues, drug issues.

Why can't a horse look that capable, phenomenal, special AND have four working legs? (Eight Belles, anyone?)

...Curlin, imo.

<3 Curlin.

And remember Silver Charm? He was still running, and winning, at 5 when so many other "super stars" are hobbling around.

...they're around.

English Channel. Better Talk Now. The Tin Man. Frost Giant. Commentator. Lawyer Ron, for all that he ran until 4. Red Rocks. Big Booster. Fabulous Strike (even though he's a tad shaky). Cardmania, way back in the day. EVENING ATTIRE, for christ's sake.

Edit:
Shakis, Ginger Punch, Hystericalady, Intangaroo (she's three, but she's SOUND!), Azeri, Tiznow, Pleasant Tap....

EC retired at 5 last year. Better Talk Now (8) is still headed to the Turf. The Tin Man retired at 9 with a broken knee; Evening Attire retired at 9 with a bowed tendon this year. Lawyer Ron is at stud. Commentator (7) is not running in the BC, but he is later this year. Frost Giant (5?) is headed to the BC Marathon. Red Rocks (6 I think) is headed to the Turf with BTN. Big Booster (7) is headed to the BC Marathon. Fabulous Strike (4) is to the Sprint. Cardmania is oldold man LOL

Shakis (7) is headed to the Turf, Ginger Punch (5) is headed to the Distaff with Hystericalady (4?) and Zenyatta (4), and Intangaroo (3) is headed to the FM Sprint with Indian Blessing (3).

you're welcome :D

Some of the Euros coming over this year are older, too, but they even retired Zarkava at 3 (7 for 7), which just annoys me to no end, because she was SO. GOOD. Beating the boys in the Arc by over 2 lengths, and they're calling it quits because there's nothing left to prove. Eh. I'm waiting to see what they do with Rainbow View (2YO, 4 for 4), because she's in the same boat.

I love Tiznow dearly, but he had back problems...

Good list! Thank you.

(And they wouldn't necessarily meet the "phenomenal" qualification, but...have a trip to your local track, you know? I saw a surprising number of older horses--an eleven-year-old, fer cryin' out loud, who's still plenty competitive--at Suffolk when I was there a few weeks back. There are still durable horses around.)

I was thinking about a horse who used to run at Saratoga named Fourstardave. He raced there at least once a year from 1987 until 1994! He made 99 career starts, which is pretty amazing these days. He was a gelding, which is probably why he raced so long. It seems most horses who have long careers are geldings.

Sunline (raced in New Zealand and Australia mostly)! Reired, sound at seven, in 2002.

My current boy raced in Hong Kong for 6 years, before being retired. He's sound, fairly sane and starting a new job eventing and show jumping.
