Saddle position

Hey all. Haven't posted in a while.

I'm so sure this question has been asked/discussed before. But due to recent discovery of conflicting views from fellow equestrians I know, I would like to ask:

Where is the correct position for the saddle to sit on a horse? And WHY use a half pad with a square pad if your saddle fits your horse well?

I used to put my saddle too far forward. When Carrie started not going well I realized my error and now make sure not to make that mistake. Most people think I am crazy (these are hunters and jumpers) and I watch them put their saddle on the horses' whithers, and I want to cringe with pain, because it is so obviously not right.
Also, it is looked down upon to not use a half pad with a square pad. I used to only use a square pad, and got a half pad because people told me I should use one, but I don't always because my saddle fits Carrie well. Plus it is wool flocked so its different than a foam pad. The panels go all the way down, so I feel like a half pad creates more pressure because of the panels pushing on the edge of it.

Really I would love some other viewpoints. Thanks guys! Carrie says hi :)
