A few thoughts on pegasi and Scootaloo [warning: highly spoilery for S3 EP5]

I thought some of you might be interested in this essay I wrote.  It's a slightly different take on Scootaloo's background, with sociological notes from Professor Daring Do.  You can find it here. Pegasus fans may be amused, or maybe I just got tired of "poor orphan Scootaloo."

Obviously, it's highly spoilery for the latest episode: Season 3, ( Read more... )

That was a great post, it made me smile, and it's an interesting theory.

And that first spoilery screenshot just makes me squeeeee halfway across the planet!!

I also assumed that Scootaloo was adopted and raised by Earth Ponies and that's why she can't fly. The idea that a kid in Ponyville could be a homeless orphan an NO ONE would notice just stretches credibility too much (especially when the kid is as sociable as Scootaloo and spends a lot of time around do-gooders like the Mane Six ( ... )

That would work too! I still prefer my theory, but almost anything to get away from the "poor Scootaloo" thing.
It's possible that enough time has gone by that almost everyone has given her up for dead, and that no one draws the connection because it seems so far-fetched. (Moms being Moms, they always hold out just a sliver of hope.)

If she was given up by her birth parents, wouldn't it be a kick if her birth mom was Spitfire? It's gotta be nearly impossible to combine family life with being a Wonderbolt. Nah, that's too tidy. But I'm sure we'll find out more about Pegasi and the Wonderbolts in that upcoming episode.

I agree that the hero-worship of Dash could be from a desire to be a "real" Pegasus. And it could be something interesting as a component of an episode, although anything has to be handled so it isn't too Special Episode-y.

I like your theory, it's interesting :)

I figured (after the Babycakes episode anyway) that Scootaloo may just have been born to earth pony/unicorn parents who are clueless as to how to properly raise a pegasus baby.

And in particular said "young lady, you get down from that ceiling!" once too often, so that she learned how *not* to fly.

But yeah, the Baby Cakes episode definitely suggests something similar might have happened, although the Mane Six sound very surprised when they see that two Earth ponies have produced a unicorn and Pegasus foal. It happens, but not that often, maybe.
