It's possible that enough time has gone by that almost everyone has given her up for dead, and that no one draws the connection because it seems so far-fetched. (Moms being Moms, they always hold out just a sliver of hope.)
If she was given up by her birth parents, wouldn't it be a kick if her birth mom was Spitfire? It's gotta be nearly impossible to combine family life with being a Wonderbolt. Nah, that's too tidy. But I'm sure we'll find out more about Pegasi and the Wonderbolts in that upcoming episode.
I agree that the hero-worship of Dash could be from a desire to be a "real" Pegasus. And it could be something interesting as a component of an episode, although anything has to be handled so it isn't too Special Episode-y.

I figured (after the Babycakes episode anyway) that Scootaloo may just have been born to earth pony/unicorn parents who are clueless as to how to properly raise a pegasus baby.

But yeah, the Baby Cakes episode definitely suggests something similar might have happened, although the Mane Six sound very surprised when they see that two Earth ponies have produced a unicorn and Pegasus foal. It happens, but not that often, maybe.
