(AT LEAST) 5 SENTENCE FIC:
{Protect} - Passing the Protector Proverbial Torch
All those years ago, he remembers the words so clearly. "Now, you and I...are the same."
His tenure is over, it's finally come time to pass his gift (burden?) on. Jacob feels more ambivalence then he expected. It's time for him to rest, though part of him wishes he could see this through to the end.
This is Jack's journey now and he can only hope that the right candidate stepped forward.
Jacob leans to fill Jack's cup and chants in Latin, "Because we don't accept this as a simple potion, but so that he shall be as one with me."
As he hands the cup to Jack, he opens his mouth to recite Mother's well-remembered words, but they don't come. What he says instead, "now, you're like me," seems more appropriate somehow.
It is done, and in Jacob's last moments his thoughts are twofold; he hopes for peace for the island's new protector and to see his brother - his real brother - again.
