Title: Flaws
Pairing: Jonghyun/Taemin
Rating: PG
Genre: Supernatural, Romance, AU
Summary: Everyone says age doesn't matter, race doesn't matter, nothing matters; as long as you love each other. But why can't a human fall in love with something they'd claim as a monster? A freak?

Author(s) notes: English is not my first language.

Taemin had always believed things that people don’t believe in. Fairies, mermaids and even devils were something he truly had interest in. So when he turned 18 and went for college, a friend of him told him to become a scientist.

“You can experiment with anything you want, bro!”

Taemin listened to his words. So he took that and studied about the human anatomy for the whole semester, amazed by how God had created the humans so perfectly. Flawless. Yet it wasn’t enough to satisfy him. God had created so many perfections; people forgot that underneath the layers of what’s normal, there were something far better.

Which is why when Taemin graduated college, he finally achieved his dreams. It’s his new job that he waited for months and months of respond by them. It was worth it because he was accepted.

Fantasy creatures are his favorites. And now he finally got to see them, in real life. Not in a book his great grandmother gave him for his birthday or the monitor screen. It’s not fake. It’s real.

“So, you’re into this whole mutant things, huh?” Taemin knew him. He was Kim Kibum, one of the students he competed with in the Science Fair back when he was a student. Taemin who had displayed an experiment about mythical creatures (literally disqualified later) remembered Kim Kibum, the boy who had done the usual experiment. Something about hot air balloon. He had gotten third place. Taemin knew because he was there the whole time, watching kids his age winning prizes while he sat next to his failed experiment.

Taemin didn’t want to be rude, so he simply nodded at Kim Kibum. Kibum doesn’t seem to remember him. “That’s why I’m here.”

“Lee Taemin, I swear your name’s familiar. I just can’t put my finger on when we met. Have we met?”

“Yeah, Science Fair back in the year 2338. I was the one who got disqualified.”

“Oh! Yes, now I remember.” Kibum grinned, he stood up and extended his right hand. His other hands were placed one of the pockets on his lab suit. “Well, Lee Taemin, welcome to our lab.”

“Thanks,” Taemin smiled.

-

This was his first time to meet a mutant. He stepped into the cage of one of the mutans they kept and taken care of. The creature wasn’t that gorgeous or hideous. It looked quite busy with a device and rather hairy. They named him Wolf, easy to remember. Easy to know what it became.

“Hi,” Taemin squat down to look at the creature closer. He was a few meters away for Wolf’s personal space. “I’m Taemin, I’ll be taking care of you for a few months or so.”

Wolf, who had been playing its PSP (now how did that get there) didn’t bother to look up. It shrugged, growling at its loss. Taemin giggled, it was just so…odd. He liked his new job. Taemin stood up and went to check on the Wolf’s meal.

Nothing was left, which means Wolf was in good condition. He just needed to refill the water bowl. Looking behind him as he placed the water bowl back to its position, Wolf was staring at him, its eyes direct and bored.

Wolf extended out his left arm, “Injection?” Taemin nodded, pleased by Wolf’s being comfortable with his presence. The injection process was simple and clean, Taemin dabbed some liquid and taken some blood from the Wolf along the way.

His blood was dark crimson, almost black.

“You smell weird,” Wolf brought Taemin back to reality.

“What?”

“Nothing.” Wolf mumbled, looking down. Taemin arch an eyebrow. “I smell weird?” He wasn’t particularly ashamed, these mutants were known for their sensitive smell (hear, touch etc). “Can you explain it a little bit more further? It’ll be useful, as a part of your curing procedure.”

“Cure?” Scoff. “I’m a damn lab experiment. I doubt I’ll be released into the world again.”

Taemin pulled out the needle, and stood up. “Do you want to get out from this place?”

“…. No.” Wolf firmly grounded out, and went somewhere at the corner.

Wolf is insecure, impatient, scared - lonely. Taemin wished he could help with that, perhaps comfort the creature by scratching its ears after they become closer.. When he went to the laboratory to give the blood tests to the respective person, he could not help but think about how hardened Wolf’s face was.

It kind of crushed the fantasy he always had back when he was a child. Mutants were always cool, why can’t Wolf think of the same?

“Taemin,” A husky voice called out from behind. “You’re coming with us? To lunch?”

Taemin took notice of the surrounding, seeing around five people. How can he not notice them just now? Blushing in embarrassment, he nodded. “Okay, sure.”

“You were daydreaming weren’t you?” Minho had this hearty laugh, it kind of eases him up. He took further steps than him, and Taemin noticed how Minho slowed down just for him. “I remember my first day here. It was shocking for me too.”

“Shocking?”

“Yeah, with how they live.”

Taemin understands that. “Yeah…”

Mutants are experiments, the government called them as one. But Minho thought the opposite of it. Taemin agreed, forgetting his lunch as he paid attention to the taller man’s lecture on the fair treatment these creature should have.

“Most of the mutants were actually humans, getting infected or genetically mutated since born. They were like us, before they turned abnormal. How would you feel, if you were suddenly hated by your own family and being called as a monster?”

If Taemin had the guts to be honest, he would say “I will love it!” or something near to that statement. He merely played with his already cold burger. “Why do you defend them so much?”

“You don’t know?”

“About what?”

“We’re all former mutants, Taemin. I’m a former mutant. You’re the first natural human to ever step into this… discovery. Kibum hadn’t told you this yet. Didn’t he?”

Apparently, he did not.
