There is a sheet of butcher's paper pinned up on the board, and there are faces all over it. The project had been for each child to describe their family, but this...
She smiled as Calvin stood in front of the class and pointed to the first face at the bottom of the page with his ruler.

"This is me"

Next face up

"This is my mum, she's a cellist. She's working in Portland at the moment."

One over

"That's my dad. He's an alien shapeshifter working for a secret government agency. He only looks human some of the time - usually he's a giant wolf, and it drives mum mad 'cause he's always shedding fur."

The ruler thwacked against the next face,

"That's grandpa K. He works for secret government agencies too, but he's human. Dad's adopted. Grandpa K's my favourite - he has all the best gadgets.

"This" he said imperiously "is Grandfather Loki. He's a God, and a prince, and he tried to take over the world. He had to give dad up because Great-Grandfather Odin has no parental skills."

The ruler barely reached the top two faces

"Great-Grandfather and Great-Grandmother. They're the rulers of Asgard and king and queen of the gods. I don't like them much. Also, never mistake Great-Grandfather for Uncle Nick"

Two down and one to the side. The man's face had been shaded in and left eye covered with a patch,

"Uncle Nick lost his eye in a battle to the death; and he's not human either - he's really a giant sea-serpent who's soooo big he can wrap himself around the earth and bite his own tail."

Through out his presentation, Calvin's gesturing had become bigger and more and more flamboyant, his voice louder and it was obviouse he could have gone on forever.

The next face was half woman, half skull, and she was beginning to get worried.

"That's Auntie Hela, and she rules the world of the dead; but she's taking a break at the moment and studying Pol Sci and hanging out with Great-Uncle Thor's girlfriend"

"That's wonderful Calvin. Very creative! But we still have to get through the rest of the class."

Calvin went back to his seat.

"You know she didn't believe a word, right?" whispered Hobbes
"I know - that's why it's going to be so much better when she gets dad in here for one of thoes parent-teacher meetings."
