Crouched on the stairs, Charlie listens. Voices filter upwards, barely reaching his ears.
"He says he doesn't feel it would be right, Alan."
"Well, he may be a genius, Maggie, but he doesn't know everything! Mark my words, he'll regret it someday."
"I don't agree. It's a choice, his choice, and if he decides not to..."
"This is ridiculous. Don didn't give us any trouble."
Silence. Then, sharply, "He isn't Don."
A sigh. "I know. And I know it's his decision, in the end. I just wish..."
Charlie retreats. A strange blend of satisfaction and disappointment follows him into unconsciousness.
