Anybody know San Francisco?

Just on the off chance... planning travel :D

I will be going from San Francisco headed north over the Golden Gate bridge in the afternoon on a Wednesday and would like to avoid rush hour traffic.

When would be a good time to go? I was thinking 3.

Also if anyone has any don't miss things to do I'd love to hear about them.

If you wanted more time in the city you could leave later. You'd be in commute traffic, but Mill Valley is only about 1/2 hour from SF so you'd get there in plenty of time for an 8pm show, I would think, if you left by 6.

But if you wanted to get out of the city earlier, in addition to Muir Woods you could consider visiting Sausalito, which is a scenic town, with fun shopping/dining/waterfront.

Or if it's a nice day and you have enough of time you could take Hwy. 1 out to the ocean. It's very beautiful. When I used to fly into SF, if I had a rental car, I used to like to drive home (to Sonoma County) that way instead of taking 101. It's a longer drive, but so gorgeous. You'd have to backtrack to get back to Mill Valley though.

For city stuff I really like North Beach. You can go to City Lights Bookstore, which is really great. Next door is Vesuvios, which is a classic sort of SF bar. Cafe Trieste has good coffee, Washington Square is a good picnic spot, or you can go to one of the many Italian restaurants in the area. If you're looking for dinner in the neighborhood, Trattoria Contadina is nice & kind of homey, w/classic Italian food, & not too spendy.

If you're around Fisherman's Wharf, I suggest a stop at the Buena Vista, where Irish Coffee was invented!

If you're in Golden Gate Park, I recommend the Japanese Garden. There's a tea house where you can get a pot of green tea and sit and enjoy the garden.

Also, Chinatown. And the Mission. Damn, I miss SF, I haven't been there in SO LONG! I go home to visit my dad every month, and even though he lives only about an hour away I never make it down to the city anymore.
