If you like a good techno-apocalpyse, you may enjoy Directive 51 by John Barnes.

It has the end of the modern world, and enough characters to feel vaguely Stephen King like, though there's not really a big good vs. evil battle or hundreds of pages of gory deaths like you'd get in a King novel. Directive 51 has a good basis in science/speculative fiction. There's also a fair bit of politics concerning presidential succession, which is where the title comes from.

It's not Alas, Babylon or anything but I enjoyed it. To the point where I was like "I have to finish this book!" and sat down earlier to determinedly devour the rest until I finished it.
