He kissed her differently now that she was his.
Kate lay in Sawyer's arms, waiting for the right moment to get up and go back to her own tent. She wasn't sure when she would know the moment was right. Maybe she'd sense something in Sawyer, a deeper relaxation, though he was asleep beside her now. Maybe just when her tears were dry.
He kissed her more gently now. Like he could be sure of her. She closed her eyes and felt the heat seep from below her lashes, trickling down her face. Like he wasn't so damn desperate anymore. It was nice. She liked it.
It was like Jack.
That was the problem. She couldn't stop thinking about Jack. She was here, with Sawyer, because of Jack. She didn't know why she couldn't get him out of her heart and her head.
Yes, she did. He was good. She wasn't, and Sawyer wasn't, but Jack was. Jack was everything she wanted for herself. He'd told her, so early on the island, that here they all had a clean slate. Now that hers had been scribbled on, he'd handed that clean slate to Juliet.
That's what really made Kate angry. She knew Juliet was evil. Not just bad, like Kate, but evil. She'd seen it in the blonde's icy blue eyes. If Jack knew the things Juliet and the Others had done to them…put them in cages, hurt them…he wouldn't be sitting out there sharing his dinner with her.
She squeezed her eyes tight. Sawyer was complacent, now. He thought that she was his. He didn't know the bitterness she felt welling up inside her when he kissed her that way, softly at first. He didn't know it reminded her of Jack, the way Jack had kissed her, with the confidence that she was his, body and soul, even though it was the first time.
Sawyer was falling in love with her, and if she didn't do something about it, it was just another bad deed she'd done. But if she stopped him now, when Jack could only see Juliet, Kate would end up alone. She told herself she was doing the right thing by leaving him now, before he could fall deeper. When he woke up and caught her leaving him, it only made things that much easier.
