The storm must have been right on top of them. All they could hear was the continuous roll of thunder, growing and fading in intensity. Jack was aware of Sawyer shivering against him. The shudders seemed to increase with the rumble of the noise overhead.

Lightning flashed bright, and Sawyer put his head down, burrowing slightly into Jack's shoulder. Jack made himself an unyielding wall, what he thought would make Sawyer feel safe, though what he wanted to do was wind his arm around the other man and hold him so tight neither of them could breathe. That Sawyer was afraid of storms went unsaid. It was obvious, and Jack knew that if he remarked on it, Sawyer would wind his blanket around his shoulders and stomp silently out into the driving rain.

"This is going to sound dumb," Jack prefaced. No sarcastic remark echoed in return. "But you know what I do when I start to feel afraid?"

"Count to five?" Sawyer's cutting remark made Jack relax slightly.

"Well, yeah, I guess, that one time," Jack said dismissively, wondering just how many people he'd told that stupid story to. Thank god he was working on his repertoire. "I think about things that make me happy."

He could feel Sawyer's glare burning into his skin. "Your favorite things," he said.

"Um, yeah, sure," Jack said. "My favorite things." He snuggled Sawyer a little closer in his distraction. "So, you go first, what are some of your favorite things?"

"Sorry, doc, but raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens just don't make the list."

Jack laughed. "That's a relief." But Sawyer didn't elaborate further. The storm crashed closer overhead. "C'mon. One thing."

"Blowjobs."

"Okay," Jack said. It wasn't quite the answer he'd expected.

"I'm not a nun," Sawyer added.

"Obviously," Jack replied. He rocked Sawyer slightly with his body. "What else?"

"Whiskey."

"Why not go for all three: alcohol, tobacco and firearms?"

"Cigarettes." Sawyer drew out the word in groan of almost sexual desire. They both took a moment to contemplate it. Once the moment died away, Sawyer added, "Books," and then he was quiet for a long time.

"That's it?" Jack asked.

"Mmm."

"That's only three things."

"Four," Sawyer corrected. "You forgot the blowjobs."

Jack opened his mouth to argue, but knew it was a lost cause. Especially since Sawyer's first choice had been the one Jack overlooked in his count. "What else?"

"Once upon a time, I woulda said layin' on the beach. Think I changed my mind there." Sawyer paused. "I'm a simple guy at heart."

Jack snickered. Sawyer's fist hit his arm, almost hard enough to hurt. "Listen," Jack said softly. "You hear that?"

"No."

"Exactly." They were both quiet another moment. "Storm's almost over." His distraction worked.

"Thanks, Jack," Sawyer said against his skin. Jack just nodded in return.

End.
