Learning to Let Go

He's surprised he doesn't feel more. Standing in the back of the room, in a scratchy black suit, Jack feels detached from the mourners, who he finds himself thinking of as the "real" mourners. There was a time when he would have said Sarah meant everything to him, and now she was gone.

Of course, the time when he would have said that would have been after she left him, not before. He married her because she loved him, and he felt like he should. When she was his wife, he loved her enough, whenever he had a free moment from the hospital (which was his life).

When she left him, that was when he needed her. Decided that he loved her. He remembers that desperation now, and it makes him nervous. It was so real when he was caught up in it.

And now…nothing. A vague sadness, a hint of emptiness. It took a plane crash and months of living in hell, but Jack has finally learned to let go.
