Karl was the only other kid where she grew up. She said she loved him -- she did love him -- because what else was she supposed to do?
On the beach, the whole world has opened to her. So many people, the likes of which she's never seen before. They dazzle her like the sun, strong overhead after so many months of rain.
Men, unfamiliar, everywhere she turns, until it makes her dizzy from spinning. Gold hair and tanned skin and sarcasm to make her heart beat fast. Grizzly scruff and inked arm and gentle hands that make her knees weak. Grandfathers and incoherent babblers and dudes.
There is a world beyond their village. Beyond the jungle, beyond the seas. But when she closes her eyes, some small part of her still longs for her father's pretty lies and the way he stroked her hair until she fell asleep.
