Friday was a day of sadness. Everyone was sad that we were leaving, and then Nacy's was closed. At 6:30 we boarded a school bus with all of our bags and headed to the airport. After we unloaded our bags we had to say goodbye to all of the friends who came with us - one of the hardest things I've ever done. Then we had to ride on planes for lots of hours. We had about an 8 hour layover in Amsterdam ("we" meaning me, Matt, Julie, Sally, and Kristi), so we left the airport to explore the city. It was early in the morning so the streets were really empty for the first couple of hours. The headshops were open though - wouldn't want the potheads to go without. We were on the streets of the Red Light District before the streetsweepers came through, so it was pretty much the most disgusting thing ever. We ate at a little hotel restaurant that was open, and I had probably the best ham and cheese omelette in existance. The cheese was oh so amazing in Amsterdam.
We walked along the canal for a bit and around the city center, where we stopped into the many souvenier shops that began opening as people woke up and the streets became more crowded. There were lots of windmills and wooden shoes. Also, Matt had us on the lookout for this chocolate that he said was the best in the world - It was the stuff in the purple wrapping, called "Milka." Indeed, that is some good stuff! I think, though, that we did not go to Amsterdam at the right time in our lives - we were sad and had just spent 4 months in Africa, so it was kind of wierd to jump right into a city like that. I'm glad we went out, though.
The rest of the trip was uneventful - flights went well and I got home on time. Thanks to Mom and Dad for bringing me some Johnny Carinos. Now I just have to adjust back to life in the US - it's harder than expected, I admit. Also it's colder than I'd like. Soon it'll be summer though and I'll be so busy I won't have time to remenisce. I suppose I'll just have to start planning a trip back!
