I was driving along yesterday when my car started making horrible clanky noises.  I didn't want to drive it any further, so I dumped it in a layby and walked back to a garage (only about 100 yards).  I was a bit worried that it was the gearbox (it's an old automatic).  I spent half an hour waiting, then the mechanic who'd picked up my car came in
