valentine's day

I had a super eventful Valentine's Day celebration with the boy, and not for all the good reasons, either!

The date with the boy went well, at least. We went and had high tea in the city, then wandered around for a while, looking at books and so on. He bought me a potted orchid instead of a bunch of roses, which caused me much angst because the last plant I had to take care of was my mum's cactus and I still managed to kill it! I can't even imagine an orchid lasting more than a week in my hands. Fingers crossed, I suppose.

Then, when I got back home, I realised that my ruby earrings were missing. I'd spent the day wearing a pair of dangly (non-valuable) gold ones, having taken off my ruby ones, which were a 21st birthday gift from my parents, and popped them into a blue velvet pouch and left them in the car. (Or, at least, I don't remember putting them into my handbag, but I might have! I just don't know!)

Cue like an hour of crazy panicked searching in the car and finding nothing. At this point it was like 40+ degrees or something in Brissie, because Australia is stupid, and I was sweating bullets. I panic-called all the places I'd been in the morning with the boy, but nobody had turned in a blue velvet pouch. I was just about ready to die! Those earrings were worth at least a grand and I was trying to imagine breaking the news to my parents, that I'd lost such a valuable gift, and it made me want to burst into tears. In the end I decided to physically retrace my steps, instead of just calling up, and drove back to where I'd parked the car, which was my University parking lot.

The moment I got through the University gates, though, I saw the pouch! It was lying in the middle of the road. Like, what? This made no sense, since I hadn't gotten out of my car or walked anywhere near this road earlier in the morning. I rushed out of my car and yep, it was my pouch, and the earrings were inside, but they'd obviously been run over by a car and were half-flattened and one of the rubies had a huge scratch in it.

Hopefully salvageable! I am taking them to a jewelry repair place and seeing how much it will cost to have them fixed. At the moment they look pretty dreadful. But at least all the stones are there, it's just the gold that needs re-shaping.

I do wonder how my earrings got to be in the middle of the road, though. Like, I'd driven on that road in the morning; but I would've had to throw my earrings out of the car, for them to actually land there, given how far away the parking lot was. If someone had picked them up elsewhere, and then dropped them there, it doesn't make sense as to why the earrings weren't missing from the pouch. (Also, if someone was doing that, usually they'd pick a more secluded place to dump the evidence than the middle of the road, right?) It's all just very perplexing.

Anyway! Ugggg, what a day. And what a miracle, finding those earrings again! Honestly, what are the chances.
