They're very easy to use - just hold them so the blade protrudes straight out of your fist and start punching. The additional benefit is that they're usually lethal, as the tremendous force and deep penetration causes massive internal damage, hence why they're illegal in many states.
1&4--!! Scary! I don't really have any advice--beyond what you know better than I do from martial arts and self-defense seminars--but just be careful!!
2--Yay, no real problem. :)
3--I guess I see the potential problem, but I'm guessing it's not usually an issue. I understand, of course, deciding not to do it, but keep in mind that your mom is also incredibly overprotective and prone to Extreme Worry, so I wouldn't dwell on it too much. (I know, like knowing that will stop you from dwelling, but I figured I'd try.)

Yeah, I'm basically being careful by not being out on the street alone, but it pisses me off because I used to count on my walks as key writing time. And geez, this is the nice part of town for crap's sake. It seems like it's just the one guy though, so when they catch him hopefully things will go back to normal
