All in all I was very impressed at how they managed all the heroes -- I didn't think anybody got left out or anybody dominated, not even Tony (which could have easily happened with a lesser director). The structure was really interesting, end-loading all the big action setpieces, but while I usually get bored in action scenes there was enough emotional story to them that it really worked for me.
Yeah, I'd read a thing beforehand that described the Avengers as potentially being "Tony Stark and Some Other Losers"--which, granted, I probably would have enjoyed anyway, but they really did an amazing job of giving screen time and reasons to care about all the heroes. Seriously, I am super impressed with how much they did in such a short time span. (The one I felt like I didn't get quite enough of was Hawkeye--since he was under Loki's control the whole first half, it took me a longer time to get to know him, especially since I knew next to nothing about him going into it.) I was also almost relieved by Black Widow--I was afraid she'd be shunted to "token woman", but the two scenes where they trick you into thinking she'll have the typical female character weaknesses, she turned it around and revealed her total control and manipulation of the entire situation. ("I'm in the middle of an interrogation right now, and they're telling me everything!")
And the movie was much funnier than I expected -- bursting out laughing in the middle of an action scene is an unexpected delight. OMG HULK SMASHING LOKI I WILL NEVER STOP LAUGHING. AND HAWKEYE'S EXPLODING ARROW LOLOLOL
I don't know if I was surprised by the humor, but I was pleasantly surprised at just HOW MUCH there was. There was one dialogue scene that I just wanted to watch over and over, for like every single line being hilarious and amazing and I want to remember all of it. ("That guy's playing Galaga." ... "How does Fury look at these screens?" "He turns." "That sounds exhausting." ... "He's my brother." "He killed 80 people." "...he's adopted.")
Oh, and Hulk interrupting Loki's "I'm a god" speech to smash him around like a rag doll? Easily the most/hardest laughs in the entire movie--apparently both times my one friend saw it. SO FUNNY.
So yeah, LOVED IT and want to see it again.
Need to see it again asap, and am sad that I'm super busy for the next two days so the earliest I could see it would be Monday... I also want to own it on DVD like right now, so I can watch some scenes over and over and over again...
Yeah there was a lot of worry about it essentially being Iron Man 3 -- even Joss says the first draft was too heavy on Tony -- but apparently they hired Joss specifically because of how he manages ensemble casts, and damn it paid off well!
the two scenes where they trick you into thinking she'll have the typical female character weaknesses, she turned it around and revealed her total control and manipulation of the entire situation. HERE IS THE SOURCE OF MY BLACK WIDOW FEELS, RIGHT HERE. Love her.
I don't know if I was surprised by the humor, but I was pleasantly surprised at just HOW MUCH there was. LOL yeah it's Joss (and Tony) so you know it'll be funny, but the jokes just kept coming in unexpected places. A lot of surprised laughter when some minor thing would pay off later in a bigger joke.
I can't even think about Hulk smashing Loki without dying of laughter.
WOULD YOU LIKE SOME AWESOME NEWS? IDK if you heard this but on the DVD there will be a full 30 minutes of deleted scenes. The original cut was 3 hours before they cut it down to 2.5, and Joss says all the cut stuff will be on the DVD. I AM SO EXCITE, CAN I HAVE THOSE 30 MINUTES NOW????
I did wonder about deleted scenes--when the idea first occurred to me, I was torn between "ooh, there are probably some amazing deleted scenes just cut for length, yay!" and "Damn, I'm gonna have to wait far too long to see those! But I didn't look it up or anything, so I am SO EXCITE to know there's a full 30 minutes on the DVD, yay!!
Also, sure, rec me some Tony/Pepper (especially h/c). :D And if you find any good OT3 fics, definitely send them my way!
