I am unreasonably excited about copyright law

HEY GUYS GUESS WHAT HEY HEY GUESS WHAT

According to the US Copyright Office, it is now LEGAL to break encryption on your DVDs to rip short excerpts to make new, noncommercial works! THIS MEANS VIDDERS, GO NUTS! :D Now, I'm not sure what this means re: using songs for vids, or posting these new, noncommercial works on YouTube, since the ruling only really deals with breaking the DVD encryption (illegal under DMCA), but still! MASSIVE VICTORY FOR VIDEO ARISTS! REMIXERS AND MASHUP ARTISTS UNITE! wooooooo

Copyright Office Statement and a good writeup about it. I saw this first on the AV Club, where the comment section has some useful elaborations of copyright law on ripping, mixing, etc.

Now, supposedly all this is for noncommercial works "for the purposes of criticism and comment", but I'm pretty sure "Character A and Character B are totally doing it" is a legitimate comment. :DDD

In other news, I am having massive I HATE EVERYTHING times, which I am hoping to cure through trying out Netflix. Currently watching the live action version of The Tick, which is (a) hilarious, (b) written/created by Ben Edlund, my SPN writer's room boyfriend, and (c) so, so gay. No, seriously. So gay. Several comics take the superhero thing and make analogies to being gay, but good Lord this show has episodes about Arhur coming out of the closet about being "super" to his family, about the uneven top-bottom power dynamics in superhero-sidekick relationships (involving a guy dressed like this who is also wearing hot pants), and when the Tick's wife shows up Arthur protests that that's "bigamy". THIS SHOW IS SO GAY IDEK. BUT IT'S ALSO HILARIOUS SO YOU SHOULD ALL WATCH IT.
