this is why i hate documentaries.
they piss me off. and most of the time not even for the right reasons. tonight i watched 8: the mormon proposition, which was - just -- i don't even have words for the level of stupidity / ignorance you see in that film. when parents can talk about feeling peace in conjunction with their child's death? that is a level of fucked up my brain cannot / does not want to process. it's not the greatest documentary, for sure; it's too heavy-handed, and there's no balance in the big picture they're showing, but i get it. it's an emotional issue for everyone at hand, and they at least tried to get comments from the other side of the fence. it wasn't entirely matter-of-fact, but they didn't mock the mormon church (even though it would have deserved it, wtf), they didn't play the victim, they just talked about their feelings about the facts that they'd been given.
AND OH DID I MENTION THEY ALSO TRIED TO LAY OUT THESE FACTS?
by no means am i a documentary buff, but i have watched my fair share, and i feel like i know when i see a good documentary. 8 wasn't great, but it did its job. it's awful, and it shows real people and real reactions in crazy situations. it probably isn't rehashing anything you didn't already know, but the more views this movie gets, the better.
the level of epic fuckery that's out there deserves to be seen.
but! then we get to the cove, the supposed (OSCAR WINNING) documentary of the century, and, like, okay, i thought i was riled up watching 8. jesus fuck, i had no idea.
it is pretty much a fucking joke of a documentary. i watched maybe half an hour of it, and then got so frustrated i had to stop, so you'll have to correct me if i'm mistaken and the whole thing gets LESS WHITE MAN FIGHT BAD CAUSE, WHITE MAN ANGRY JAPANESE PEOPLE NOT LISTEN, JAPANESE GOVERNMENT STUPID AND USELESS, WHITE MAN FIX etc etc later on in the movie.
because pretty much that entire first thirty minutes? ALL ABOUT THIS ONE MAN'S FUCKING CRUSADE. where is the shit about the dolphins. where is the ACTUAL brutality i should be concerned about? i don't give a fuck about the red tape you had to go through, or what you (and the rest of your WHITE MAN IS SUPERIOR TEAM) think about the situation, and i won't till you can show me you have a legitimate cause to be that riled up. not to mention you sound like a FUCKING POMPOUS ASSHOLE. GTFO YOUR HIGH HORSE OR LET SOMEONE ELSE NARRATE THE GODDAMN DOCUMENTARY. because i don't like the idea of these dolphins in captivity any more than the next guy, but I AM ALMOST ROOTING FOR THE JAPANESE RIGHT NOW, KTHX.
just--whatever.
i have more thoughts, but these elevated bp levels are doing nothing for my health.
i mean, sharkwater dealt with similar issues, from a similar perspective, but they DID IT RIGHT. this is not avatar, and i will not buy into the idea of one white man saving an entire population of naked blue aliens with his amazing powers of ~knowing what's best.
get the fuck over yourself, dude.
