this story made me think ai, and the machine stops, and a brand new world, all in one. maggie wrote 'i'm playing in an unfamiliar neighbourhood, here.' in her notes, and that's basically what it is. it starts out harmless, all cute and fun, until it's... not. s'amazing stuff.
[AJ spans his hand over his cheekbones, fingertips making small pained circles against the corners of his eyes. "I already told you," he says, weary. "It doesn't work like that."
"You're too goddamn frightened for it to work," Nick snaps, then adds, "Aje." AJ glances at him warily, because the yelling and anger didn't phase him but this, this sweet soft affectionate rendering of his name, that undoes him. When Nick goes over and guides him out the door, towards the lift, there's no resistance at all.]
