Because I realized Nick’s been left out of things for a while.

digital getdown; binoculars; desolate; poppyseeds; pedigree

Brian ran. His lungs were burning inside his chest, and his heart thudded wildly, erratically, and still he ran. He wouldn’t stop, not even when his legs felt like lead weights and he had to drag them through the mud and slosh. Finally, he reached a main road, and slammed into someone, unseeingly, and when the impact threw him to the ground, he lay there quietly, ignoring the strange looks he was drawing, and then slowly forced himself to sit up.

Tilting his head back against the display window of the shop behind him - one of those small, you-can-find-it-all-here stores - he took a deep shuddering breath. He’d never been too good at handling stress.

“Can I help you, sir?”

Brian started, struggling to his feet. “Uh, no.” He said to the bulk of chest that greeted him. A warm breath skittered across his forehead, and Brian looked up into concerned eyes as blue as his own. “No, thank you. I’m just gonna. Um. Browse.”

The man-boy, since he looked relatively young, smiled politely and nodded.

Brian stared at the blonde behind the counter as he walked partially through the aisles. He’d put on a pair of glasses, and was staring intently at what Brian assumed was the Accounts Book. Brian was mesmerized. So much so that he didn’t realize he’d grabbed a pair of binoculars off one of the shelves, till the cashier looked up, right at him, and gave him a polite, blank look. Fumbling, Brian grabbed a box of Pedigree and added it to whatever it was he was holding onto, and all but ran to the front, dropping it all onto the counter, thankful he was the only one in the shop. “Um, I. No, I’m just. Just shopping for my, uh. My-”

Nick - as Brian realized his nametag read - smiled helpfully, “Dog?”

“Um, yeah. That’s right. My dog. So, um, what are you doing here?” Nick gave Brian a puzzled look. “I mean, you could be. I’m sure you’ve got a diploma in something or other.” Inwardly cursing himself for his sudden inability to keep his mouth shut, Brian gave Nick another encouraging smile.

Nick seemed hesitant for a moment, and then smiled, “Well, a guy’s gotta make ends meet, y’know? And since there aren’t any other jobs open that I’ve found…”

‘You could always get yourself a farm and start planting poppyseeds,’ Brian wanted to say. Except on second thought, it didn’t sound as funny as he would have liked, so he settled for a soft, simple, “Oh.”

“Yeah,” Nick sighed. “I used to think I might have a shot at singing, you know? And I’d have come up with a song titled, I don’t know, ‘Digital Getdown’, or something.”

Brian found himself cracking an unwilling smile. “Digi-*what*?”

Nick grinned, his cheeks turning only a tinge rosier than they already were, handing Brian his bag hurriedly. “Well sir, have a nice day.”

Brian gave him an uncertain nod, and left the shop, his mouth still curling slightly at the edges.

Much later that night, Nick was wandering aimlessly down the street, mulling over the strange man he’d met that afternoon, his feet leading him through familiar alleys and deserted streets, till he reached that corner he’d resisted for what seemed like forever now.

Nick pushed the short blonde out of his mind, eyes already scanning the corner - AJ wasn’t there, and never would be again - for… Then he saw him, the same moment the brunette caught sight of Nick, standing alone a little way ahead.

JC smiled, slowly, starting to move toward him, a sexy smirk in place. “Hey you. It’s been a while.”

Nick managed a smile. “I’m sure you’ve had plenty to keep you busy.” Nick had changed now. He was stronger. It might not seem like it, but a few weeks really was a long time.

JC seemed startled for a minute, then his composure was back in check. “Come on, baby,” JC’s voice was full of allure, and Nick was tempted to shake his head, but those eyes were so desolate, so alone, that Nick couldn’t find it in himself to say no. And at any rate, deep down, he knew he wanted this, too.

“Usual rate?”

JC just leaned forward and nipped his earlobe.

“God, I missed you.”

Purring softly in response, JC let Nick kiss him, and then started for their usual room, Nick not far behind, already anticipating an amazing night ahead.
