Fiction by Dira Sudis Author's Summary: Charlie gets kidnapped. Things get worse from there.
Review:
Like Dira's summary so succinctly puts it, this epic begins with mathematician Charles (Charlie) Epps getting grabbed off the street by an enigmatic criminal who uses Charlie's proven problem solving capabilities to pull off heists across the country. Charlie's brother, FBI Agent Don Epps, with whom Charlie often worked while bring down various criminal elements, finds himself driven to hunt down and bring home his brother. However, when he finally finds Charlie, Don discovers Charlie has endured so much that he no longer remembers who he is or what he used to be, and Don has to work his way into his brother's confidence. And also figure out how get the two of them out of there.
I first read this story in serial form, day-by-day, as Dira posted links to each chapter on her journal (it was torture, but I loved every minute of it). Don's struggle with finding his brother, and then attempting to find his brother again, is amazing. Charlie's amnesia isn't simply played for convenience, and neither are the ordeals we see him going through. There's angst (oh, is there angst), there's devastation, and then there's rebuilding. Scenes simply stick with you (the one where Alan Epps gives Don his blessings to find Charlie? *wonderful* Old Testament imagery). It's lovely, and it's long, and it's Dira Sudis. Seriously, go on and read.
