Review:
Previous Engagement smashes the slow-paced investigative approach of Detective Conan into the mad-cap antics of Ranma 1/2. The result is surprisingly dramatic oneshot; the established couple of Ran and Shinichi, having escaped their canon's romantic stalemate, provide a baseline of normality that highlights Ranma's weirdness, but also its pathos.
The fic requires familiarity with Ranma’s canon to follow (and knowing the premise of Detective Conan) because the fic showcases quite a few of Ranma’s characters and their peculiar issues, either through Shinichi and Ran’s observations or through a scene from their perspective.
The dialogue is mostly fast-paced and full of meaningful non-verbal interaction, which works very well in a Ranma fic. While the story does quickly degrade into violence, often a warning sign in crossovers, the nature of the fight and its aftermath are handled in an intelligent manner and one that feels true to the themes of both canons.
Also, I like how Ran and Shinichi work together. Sharp-eyed Shinichi picks out every detail, endlessly building a picture of how Nerima functions, while Ran smoothes her way through social situations and zealously protects him. It’s a partnership that canon denies us for the sake of will-they-won't-they social tension, but few fics reach the point of portraying.
