Summary: Being the Commander and being the lover of someone in a quasi-terrorist organization can often put Squall into conflict. Fortunately, Rinoa is the kind of lateral thinker he needs to cut through the Gordian knot of his own neuroses, and it helps that she's a sorceress as well. After all, if a monster is tough enough to challenge Cloud Strife, then Squall needs all the backup he can get.
Review: This is an interesting Final Fantasy VIII story written from Squall's POV. Cloud is fused into the canon as if he has always been part of the world. That creates a wonderful mysterious air around him that hints at an interesting backstory. Predictably this skews a bit into AU territory, but with such amazing worldbuilding for such a short piece.
It does start out as an established relationship piece, but with Cloud off on a mission and Squall worried about him when a call for help comes in.
What I like most about this story: Rinoa being the amazing sorceress and good friend, the action scenes, magic descriptions that fit in with the game and still read nicely, and the understated way the lovers talk to each other which is very in character, but also transport how much they care for each other.
It's really well written, too.
