Review:
walked right out of the machinery is lexically beautiful. The perspective is third-person limited, with Jack O’Neill as the main character and the text is split between vivid description, sarcastic internal commentary and terse dialogue. All three are constantly in elliptical orbit around the issues that loom too monumental to avoid and, equally, too vast to deal with head-on.

The use of dialogue is especially fascinating. Conversations are as much about Jack’s view of his conversational partners as what they say. And, as everywhere in this story, most important of all is what is unsaid; the negative space created by the conclusions people are unwilling to share, or even think.

I’m not going to share any of the plot of this fic, because I thought that the first part was greatly enhanced by the mystery of exactly what has gone so wrong. What could possibly cause such devastation, require such careful avoidance?

So: walked right out of the machinery is about the nature of Stargate Command and how it goes above and beyond for its people, whilst demanding the impossible of them. It is about how the Tok’ra and how the three-way alliance between Jaffa, Tok’ra and Tauri might work. It is about the strength of friendship and caring and it is about all the myriad ways that friendship and caring allow and encourage betrayal. It is about the things Jack O’Neill fears most and how he might overcome those fears.
