winterhill Author's summary: Q is fucking marvellous on a good day, and Bond wants to learn how to use a computer. Or, Q is an arrogant little shit most of the time, but Bond’s noticed he’s not quite so confident after Silva. Spoilers for Skyfall.
Review:
Q's confidence is rattled by having the system hacked by Silva, but he hasn't lost his wit and drive. Bond is charming and unstoppable, with an interest in learning about computers.
This is light on its feet, and it reads quickly, but winterhill has a way of using well placed details to make everything feel more fleshed out than you'd expect in 4,000 words, creating a good sense of mood and setting without slowing things down. Q's concern for 008 helps give a wider sense of MI6 as well. The dialogue is fantastic: flirting that's dry and sharp, plus Bond's understated concern about Q.
Despite the lighter tone, the dangers and uncertainty of the job are still here in the wake of Silva, and they round this out and give it heart in addition to attitude.
“I can be nice,” said Bond.
“I have yet to see it.”
“You saw me in Harbin,” said Bond.
“Oh, that was nice?” asked Q. “I rather thought that was sex prior to ruining the ice festival.”
“I didn’t ruin it,” said Bond.
“The explosion melted half of the sculptures,” said Q. “I like the ice festival, and you ruined it.”
“You don’t fly,” said Bond. “Have you even been?”
“I’m a very active user of the internet,” said Q. “I don’t need to get wet and cold to like the ice festival.”
“One day,” said Bond, “I am going to take you so far out of your comfort zones that you cry.”
“Still not seeing the nice in you,” said Q. “All right, try again.”
“I don’t recognise this OS,” said Bond, and wasn’t that lovely, he was using terms like OS.
“That’s because I made it for you,” said Q. “It rewards you for doing the right thing with pictures of fast cars and expensive suits.”
“Not beautiful women?”
“If you’re not careful, I’ll program it with pictures of me.”
“That would be an acceptable alternative,” said Bond.
“Acceptable,” said Q, huffing a little sigh. “You disappoint me so much.”
