Review:
When Frank breaks up with him, Patrick feels the intense need to just get away. He signs up for an internship abroad in Marine Biology, hoping to get sent somewhere far away. It’s completely unexpected when he’s sent all the way to Ireland.
This is one crazy tangle of misunderstanding. There is not a single easy relationship in this story except the one that meets an untimely ending. Even the friendships are fraught with lies and confusion. Honestly, it becomes a bit too much at points, possibly because of the idyllic background it’s all cast against, possibly because of the unrepentantly chipper ending.
The story is split into four parts, four seasons, and each of these parts starts out with a little back story. These glimpses into the past are perhaps the most angsty bits of all. The POV switches often but quite coherently. Considering the number of characters and, heck, the sheer number of bands in this one, the whole thing is almost remarkably clear.
One warning, both Ryan and Spencer are really quite unlikable in several places in this one. Ryan is kind of understandable; he’s cast as the prick of Panic at the Disco fics pretty much across the board. Spencer is another matter. He comes across as one of the most temperamental characters I’ve ever read in any story ever. It’s extremely off-putting. Luckily the main pairing is Patrick/Pete, and the two of them are, if anything, nicer than you’ll normally find in fandom.
