Scarecrow Horses Review:
Sometime near the end of season five, Dawn decides the only way anyone’s going to pull through this apocalypse is if she leaves. Taking matters into her own hands she convinces Spike to go along with her plan, but the only way he’ll go with her is if they have a respectable front-man. And that’s how Xander wakes up in the back of the DeSoto with no memory of the past three days.
This is one of those stories that’s set somewhere in season five, which gives it automatic props in my book. But it’s also a story of Spike, Dawn and Xander making a family for themselves. I love that it is set in Mexico, and Tabaqui seems to have some actual knowledge of the locale, describing it in depth.
Tabaqui has a tendency to write Spike a la season two, and despite the fact this is season five Spike, you can really see the season two parts of him. He loves more sweetly, less obsessively. Xander has been a bit broken, and although being a part of the Scoobies helped put him back together, being away from them makes him see how fragile their friendship really is. This makes for a darker romance, a need and ownership that is almost disturbing on some levels. And what Spike has to do in order to provide for his little family… This is not your lighthearted romantic romp, but if you’re fond of darker tales it’s well worth the read.
