mononoke_anime Prompt: Naming a pet after the Medicine Seller
Characters: Kayo
Pairing: Medicine Seller/Kayo
Rating: G
Author's Note/Disclaimer: No part of Mononoke is mine, though there is so much that I wish was. And I also got rid of the word count, because it simply became too bothersome to change the word count (and in various entries when cross-posted) whenever I edited it.
Kayo found the puppy outside the walls of her house as it was browsing, snuffling, for food. It had a plump body and stout legs ended by a round fluffy tail. She scooped it up in her arms immediately and declared that she would "love it truly and take the best care of it."
Once the puppy was in her arms, "What shall I name you, hmm?" was the only intelligible phrase she uttered before the rest of her speech descended into nonsense vowels and made-up words. Once inside, "the best care" - aside from baby speech - also seemed to consist of dressing up the little puppy, who probably by now wished that it was back outside. It was like being a young girl with a doll again. She looked around the room for items that she could dress the puppy up in. Her eyes fell upon an empty matchbox. She picked it up, toyed with it briefly and then, without quite knowing what or why she was doing, made a little backpack for the puppy from the matchbox and some string. Now the puppy had more than its little full stop-tail for punctuation. She thought that there was something missing.
In the evening, Kayo realised what was missing, what she had been imagining when she had first tied the matchbox onto the little puppy. It was now lapping at a saucer of water, seemingly quite happy and either oblivious or accustomed to its added accessory. She paused, looking at the puppy and then reaching out a hand to stroke it absently. There was hesitation in her eyes, like the wavering look a child has when they are trying to cross from one stepping stone to the next.
By the next morning, Kayo, with all resolution, had completed what she had deemed missing the previous night. It was a little outfit for the puppy - brightly patterned blue kimono, red-gold obi, a purple cloth for its head and lastly, thin strips of cotton for its legs. The puppy whined as it was being dressed in this, but otherwise, offered no resistance. Looking at the puppy in its outfit, Kayo smiled brightly.
"I know what I'll name you now! You can be Kusuriuri-san! Yes, that'll be perfect. I didn't think of it before, but it just came to me when I see you like this."
And then, a pause.
"I want to see you again."
