putting it out there: i do not like glee.
but there is something very very interesting that they've introduced, which is the gay jock. ok everyone is probably squinting at that sentence and thinking 'what about the old stereotype'. the old stereotype doesn't exist. at least the out gay jock doesn't.
the anti-gay atmosphere in sports culture is still very much alive. to memory,i think i only know billie jean king who is open. i looked on glaad.org just now to see that matthew mitcham (olympic gold medalist back in 2008) is out too. but still: there are very few openly gay athletes, or if they are, they aren't showcased. it is not to say that the first thing to know about someone is their sexuality, but it is curious that there is no large, widespread advocacy to allow acceptance in sports.
whichhhh brings me back to glee. for those of you who don't know, a big hulking hockey jock by the name of Dave Karofsky has been bullying Kurt until Kurt finally has enough and chases down Karofsky to demand what is the problem.

THE IMPORTANT PART:
1. Dave's initiation of the kiss
THE MORE IMPORTANT PART:
2. The second attempt. The second attempt means that he was cool with it and wanted another round. He doesn't get it. This is where it gets interesting: he actually backs off. There's been a lot of mumblers going on about how Dave is essentially a tormentor. Judging from his previous actions, he may very well have just gotten that second kiss, but he backs off, does a whiny cry and hits lockers and leaves. Probably mostly fueled by embarrassment and anger at getting pushed away, but at the same time, it's actually heartbreaking. I don't really want to go into too much extrapolation, but given the current culture of sports probably spurned Dave into kissing Kurt, who's open because there's a sliver of a chance of acceptance there. The push back to Dave is an indication in his mind that even KURT won't accept him.
3. There's something about how Karofsky corners him later on and threatens him if he ever says anything about the kiss. I haven't found it on youtube and i think i'll need to watch that ep to comment on it but )o).
The whole point of the matter:
I hope they give a good story for Dave. I really, truly do. This show might not be my favorite. By...any...means. But I do hope that they show that it's not crazy to be into SPORTS and be GAY. I hope that Dave can find a stable relationship, or just simply be stable. I hope they show that Dave is accepted in the end. I hope that Dave does not funnel into the Glee club after being ousted by his hockey team or some ridiculous plot like that because more than anything, the message of inclusion MUST be shown. It is not enough to show a gay jock, it is more telling and more poignant to watch what everyone does in response to him.
