sexism?

Each of the counts is a felony carrying a possible sentence of life in prison

first, i'd like to say how i'm glad that each count carries such a strong sentence.  it's refreshing to know that sometimes a pedophile does face substantial punishment, even though it really does nothing to diminish the hell he put his victims through.

however, i find it extremely angering that a charge of sodomy carries a possible life sentence whereas the average time served for most convicted rapists is only 5 years (the average sentence being 9 years).

WTF?

does it take kidnapping to bring a life sentence?  in the case of Elizabeth Smart, who went through significant torture and abuse in addition to kidnapping and 9 months of repeated rape, only 6 charges were filed - and only 4 were first degree felonies which carried a possible life sentence.

somehow i get the feeling that were she not kidnapped, her rape and torture would not have brought charges carrying possible life sentences.  and i wonder, too, if sodomy is treated as a more heinous crime than vaginal rape and why.

rape, sodomy, law, sexism
